Edworthy Park sits along the Bow River in Calgary, bordered by the community of Wildwood. The City of Calgary gives the address as 5050 Spruce Dr. S.W., at Bow Tr. and Spruce Dr.; use that address when planning your arrival.

The park includes the natural areas of Douglas Fir Trail and Lawrey Gardens. Its size and river-valley setting offer several ways to spend time outdoors, from using pathways to stopping at a picnic site. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The land has a working history as well as a recreational one. It was once part of Cochrane Ranch, then Thomas Edworthy purchased it in 1883. Edworthy and his neighbour John Lawrey established a market garden that supplied railway crews and homesteaders with fresh fruit and vegetables.

After sandstone was found on the property, Edworthy operated quarries that supplied stone for Calgary buildings. The City purchased the land in 1962 to develop it as a park.

Pathways and natural areas shape a visit to Edworthy Park, with the Bow River forming a boundary along the park. Douglas Fir Trail and Lawrey Gardens are among its named natural areas, and pathways are one of the park’s features.

You can plan time for a walk along the park’s pathways and combine it with a stop at a picnic site or one of the park’s other facilities. The park’s trail lengths and walking times are not described, so choose your route on site and follow posted directions and closures.

Stay clear of the railway corridor. Land about 15 metres (50 feet) on either side of the centre of the railway tracks is privately owned by Canadian Pacific and subject to trespassing laws. Keep off the tracks and use only public grade crossings; walking, hiking and other use of paths in the railway right-of-way are not allowed.

What facilities and park rules should you know?

What facilities and park rules should you know?

Edworthy Park has playgrounds, picnic facilities, pathways and off-leash areas. Features include inclusive and standard playgrounds, picnic sites and shelters, a gazebo, picnic tables, benches and parking lots.

Picnic sites are available at no charge on a first-come, first-served basis when they are not reserved or booked. You can book a site online through the City of Calgary or by calling 403-268-3800. Check the official site before you go for current park details and any changes to access or facilities.

Pay particular attention to railway boundaries and public crossings while using the park. The railway right-of-way is not a pathway, and the restrictions apply to walking and hiking as well as other uses.

Where can you park, and how do you plan access?

Where can you park, and how do you plan access?

The park has two parking lots: South Parking Lot and Edworthy North (Lot 84). Use the park address to orient yourself, then follow local directions to the lot that suits your planned access.

If you are travelling by bus or CTrain, Calgary public transport basics can help you understand the city’s transit options. Confirm the route and stop that work for your trip before setting out.

How can you plan a visit from the hotel area?

Edworthy Park is about a 12-minute drive from Red Carpet Inn & Suites. Start by deciding whether you plan to use a parking lot, visit a picnic area or walk a pathway, then use the park address to guide your arrival.
