What to expect

  1. Horseshoe Canyon

    30 min

The canyon gets its name from its horseshoe shape, defined by two coulees that flow into the Kneehill Creek, a tributary of the Red Deer River. The canyon's two arms are approximately 5 km long each, extending from Highway 9 to Kneehill Creek, at two former mining communities of Dunphy and Gatine. In turn, it gives the name to the Horseshoe Canyon Formation.

  2. Drumheller

    15 min

    Welcome to Drumheller!

  3. The Hoodoos

    30 min

A hoodoo is a tall thin rock spire made of sandstone with a hard and dense rock sitting on top, like a hat. Or as the sign at the park describes them: “Eroded pillars of soft sandstone rock topped with a resilient cap.“
The hoodoos are formed over hundreds of years through erosion from freezing, frost, melt and wind. Over time, the sandstone erodes into long chimney-like formations that remain standing because the hard rock “hat” keeps it from completely eroding away.
The hard rock on the top of the hoodoos protects the soft layer of sandstone underneath from the elements creating the odd shape. But once they reach the stage of being the cute fairytale chimneys, they don’t last long! It is said that every 100 years, they lose 2-4 feet.

  4. Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site

    30 min

The Atlas Coal Mine National Historic Site is an inactive coal mine in Alberta, Canada that operated from 1936 to 1979. It is considered to be Canada's most complete historic coal mine and is home to the country's last standing wooden coal tipple, and the largest still standing in North America. It was designated an Alberta Provincial Historic Resource in 1989 and a National Historic Site of Canada in 2002.

  5. World's Largest Dinosaur

    30 min

The "World's Largest Dinosaur" is the name of a roadside tourist attraction in the form of a model Tyrannosaurus rex

  6. Drumheller's Little Church

    15 min

Originally built in 1968, this famous tiny church serves as a place of worship & meditation.

  7. Horsethief Canyon

    30 min

It's hard to believe we have something this natural and breathtaking in the middle of nowhere Alberta! The views are amazing, and you're left with a sense of peacefulness that modern society doesn't...

  8. Royal Tyrrell Museum

    2 hours

Ranked as one of the top paleontology museums in the world, the Royal Tyrrell Museum opened in September 1985. Figures for 2018 show The Royal Tyrrell Museum welcomed more than 450,000 visitors.
